Kazakhstan increases its oil refining output by 3.6%
Between January and November 2024, Kazakhstan’s oil refineries processed 16.7 million tons of oil, marking a 3.6% increase year-on-year (YoY), according to the Ministry of Energy.
During this period, oil product output also increased:
- Motor gasoline: Up 1.1% YoY to 4.88 million tons;
- Diesel fuel: Up 3% YoY to 4.91 million tons;
- Jet kerosene: Up 18.6% YoY to 0.68 million tons.
The ministry reported that oil refineries nationwide are operating smoothly nationwide, ensuring uninterrupted shipments and consistently replenishing fuel and lubricant stocks.
KazMunayGas (KMG), Kazakhstan’s state-owned oil company, reported a 5.2% decline in oil refining during the period from January to September 2024, totaling 14.12 million tons. However, KMG’s oil and gas condensate production grew by 3.1% YoY, reaching 18.05 million tons over the nine-month period.
Kazakhstan has three major oil refineries: Atyrau Oil Refinery, Pavlodar Oil Chemistry Refinery and Shymkent PetroKazakhstan Oil Products, all owned by KMG. The joint venture Caspi Bitum, co-owned by KazMunayGas and China’s CITIC Resources, along with the Condensate JSC, historically associated with Natalya and Valery Junussov (as reported by Forbes in 2018), also contribute to the country’s oil refining capacity. Additionally, more than 30 mini-refineries are currently operational across Kazakhstan.
