AIX trading volume drops as ITS breaks records
The trading volume on the Investment Trade Solution (ITS) platform reached a record high of $66 million in November, marking a 71% ($27.5 million) rise compared to the previous month. Meanwhile, the same indicator for the Astana International Exchange (AIX) decreased by 30.8% month-on-month to $121 million.
ITS CEO Chingiz Kanapyanov highlighted that November’s growth in trading volume was fueled by increased clientele and new financial instruments.
«We expect that trading volume will continue to grow and the trading platform will keep expanding its line of financial instruments,» Kanapyanov noted.
The 10 most popular assets by trading volume in November included the stocks of the ITS World ETF Fund, Freedom Holding Corp., SPDR Bloomberg, Bilibili, Nvidia, Advanced Micro Devices, Coinbase Global, SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust, MARA Holdings and Apple.
Bonds and stocks account for 92.3% and 7.7%, respectively, of the total trading volume on the AIX. In November, the most actively traded securities were issued by Solidcore Resources ($3.8 million), Air Astana ($1.6 million), Globaltrans ($819,000), KazMunayGas ($793,000), Kazatomprom ($586,000), Kaspi.kz ($534,000), KEGOC ($372,000), Halyk Bank ($342,000), Bank CenterCredit ($198,000) and Freedom Holding Сorp. ($99,000). The stock market index rose by 4.8% month-on-month.
The AIX reported that by the end of the third quarter, its trading volume increased 2.7-fold to $217 million compared to the same period last year. Since its inception in 2017, the total trading volume has reached $2 billion, with $922 million generated in the current year alone.
The AIX was established in 2017 within the development of the Astana International Financial Centre (AIFC). AIX’s shareholders are the AIFC, the Shanghai Stock Exchange, the Silk Road Fund and Nasdaq. The stock exchange operates within a regulatory environment based on the principles of English law.
ITS was launched in early June 2023. The platform is an AIFC-licensed multilateral trading facility (MTF). Unlike traditional stock exchanges, ITS doesn’t provide issuers with a platform for the primary listing; all the instruments available for trading are already placed in other jurisdictions.
The owners of ITS are Freedom Kazakhstan Ltd., the Foundation for the Support and Development of the International Financial Center, AIFC Markets Limited and Roman Goryunov, the former head of the Saint Petersburg Stock Exchange. However, there is no open-source information about the size of their shares.
