President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev and U.S. President-elect Donald Trump have talked via phone and shared their visions on the international agenda. They also discussed a wide range of issues related to the partnership between the two countries.

«Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has congratulated Donald Trump on being elected president of the U.S. The two officials have confirmed their mutual commitments to the intense development of the strategic partnership in trade, investments and nuclear nonproliferation,» the press service of Kazakhstan’s president reported.

According to the press service, during the phone conversation, Tokayev informed Trump about Kazakhstan’s position on current issues on the international agenda. However, the service didn’t provide any details about the specific topics discussed.

«The two presidents have agreed to stay in touch to maintain a high level of bilateral cooperation,» the press service said in a statement.

Like many other countries around the world that might be affected by Trump’s approach to tariffs and oil prices, Kazakhstan has been trying to protect its interests through direct negotiations with the U.S. government. At the working level, Astana and Washington discuss international and bilateral issues within the framework of the United States-Kazakhstan Enhanced Strategic Partnership Dialogue. This platform was established in January 2018 (during the first term of President Trump), following the visit of ex-President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev to Washington. At the time, the two countries made a joint statement on the U.S.-Kazakhstan Enhanced Strategic Partnership in the 21st century.
