Kazakhstan is going to assess student performance with the help of the Social GPA assessment system, which evaluates students’ social skills and their participation in school and community activities. The Ministry of Education highlighted that this system emphasizes students’ comprehensive development and shouldn’t be confused with the American GPA scale.

«Social GPA is an assessment of students’ participation and achievements in extracurricular and social activities as well as their results in supplementary education. We are introducing the Social GPA grading system to promote the inclusive development of students and to shape essential competencies based on core educational values,» the agency explained in response to an inquiry from Kursiv.media.

The Ministry emphasized that the Social GPA differs from the American 4.0 GPA scale.

«The 4.0 GPA scale in the U.S. is used to evaluate academic performance, determine class rankings and enroll in universities. In contrast, the Social GPA in Kazakhstan focuses on assessing social skills, participation in community and school life as well as performance in supplementary education,» the agency said.

The Ministry of Education has developed a new version of the State Compulsory Educational Standard. The document includes many other amendments to the school curriculum.
