The Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) intends to rectify the border between the Russian Tyumen region and Kazakhstan to establish appropriate conditions for border control, as reported by the local news agency Megatyumen.ru.

The corresponding draft regulation has been published on the Regulation.gov.ru portal, the official database for draft laws in Russia. According to the draft’s authors, the resolution is needed to «optimize the border area and rectify the borderlines.»

«The document will rectify coordinates of the border between Russia and Kazakhstan in the Tyumen region and will fix sites and timetables for entering the border area for both pedestrians and vehicles,» Vedomosti, a Russian business news outlet, reported.

The Tyumen region neighbors the North Kazakhstan region. There are two checkpoints along the border: Kyzylzhar on the Kazakhstani side and Kazanskoye on the Russian side.

A similar legal procedure was carried out last November when the FSB rectified the border between the Chelyabinsk region and northern Kazakhstan.

In 2023, Kazakhstan’s Deputy Foreign Minister Roman Vassilenko claimed that the demarcation of the Kazakhstan-Russia border was in its final stage.

Kazakhstan and Russia have no disputed areas along their border. That being said, the East Kazakhstan region has yet to complete the demarcation of its state border with Russia. As of September 2024, this work remained unfinished near Belukha Mountain, the highest peak in the Altai Mountains.
