Courts in Kazakhstan are actively leveraging the advantages of artificial intelligence (AI). As Aslambek Mergaliyev, the chairman of Kazakhstan’s Supreme Court, reported to President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, AI has reviewed one-third of all the court documents and cases — 665,000 out of 2 million.
Mergaliyev added that AI tools have significantly streamlined the judges’ workflows. In 2022, an AI assistant was integrated into Kazakhstan’s Digital Analytics of Judicial Practice service.
«This software is designed to understand key aspects of judicial decisions, compare them, identify anomalies and predict the outcomes of civil cases. This allows judges to gain a comprehensive view of legal precedents in similar cases, including cassations when a lawsuit is filed,» Kazakhstan’s Supreme Court’s press service reported.
Nevertheless, authorities asserted that only judges have the authority to make decisions, while AI assistant serves as a reference source only.
According to Mergaliyev, the number of settlements in civil and administrative legal cases is growing in Kazakhstan. Additionally, the number of cases reviewed with jurors also rose from 147 in 2023 to 261 in 2024.
