Kazakhstan reports decline in new payment card issuance

According to statistics from the National Bank of Kazakhstan, in 2024, Kazakhstani banks issued 6.8 million new payment cards, increasing the total number in circulation from 74.5 million at the start of the year to 81.3 million by early 2025. This marks a 9.1% growth rate for 2024, down from 14.5% in 2023 and 9.78% in 2022.

In December 2024, the number of non-cash transactions rose 12.2% year-on-year (YoY) to 1.6 billion, while their total value grew 19.7% YoY to $33.5 billion. More than 80% of these transactions were made via mobile banking, with 19% processed through payment terminals.

In December, Kazakhstanis withdrew $4.8 billion across 20.8 million transactions, reflecting a 2.6% decline from December 2023, even though the total withdrawal amount increased by 9.8%. Throughout the fall, monthly cash withdrawals ranged from $4 billion to $4.4 billion.

According to the National Bank, over 350,000 transactions are processed daily through its payment infrastructure, totaling $11.3 billion per day. In the first nine months of 2024, the cumulative transaction volume reached 1 quadrillion tenge ($1.9 trillion).
