Kazakhstan’s national carrier Air Astana has launched its first direct flight from Almaty to Mumbai, with the inaugural service taking off on April 20, the airline announced via its official Telegram channel.
The launch marks a milestone, coinciding with the 20th anniversary of Air Astana’s first flight to India. The new route to Mumbai will operate three times per week — on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Sundays — with a flight time of just under five hours.
The new service not only offers a faster connection for Kazakhstani travelers heading to Mumbai but also positions the city as a convenient transit hub. From Mumbai, travelers can easily reach other Indian cities such as Hyderabad, Kolkata and Ahmedabad.
Tourists can apply for a visa online by completing an application at the official Indianvisaonline.gov.in website no later than four days before departure. Applications are typically processed within three business days, with results sent via email.
Round-trip fares from Almaty to Mumbai in May start at approximately $730. Air Astana also offers direct flights from Almaty to Goa, Delhi and Chandigarh. Additionally, the airline’s low-cost subsidiary FlyArystan operates flights twice a week between Astana and Goa.
More connections between the two countries are on the way. Starting May 14, 2025, Indian low-cost airline IndiGo will launch direct flights between Astana and Delhi, operating three times a week.
In early April, Kazakhstan’s Civil Aviation Committee announced that foreign low-cost carriers — including Eastar Jet, T’way, SpiceJet and AirAsia — will begin operating flights to Kazakhstan. Around 20 new international routes are expected, with a focus on expanding service to Thailand and South Korea.
