Almaty surgeons perform rare surgery on newborn’s neck

Almaty doctors have successfully conducted a complex surgery on a newborn boy. According to the Almaty Department of Public Health, the boy was diagnosed with a rare condition: a giant cystic lymphangioma on his neck.
The baby was born on March 23 via Cesarean section in Almaty, suffering from respiratory and heart failure. Due to his critical condition, he was immediately admitted to the Center for Children’s Emergency Care and placed on a ventilator.
Health officials noted that they were aware of the 12-centimeter mass before the baby was born, thanks to ultrasonography.
At first, doctors drained more than 500 milliliters of fluid from the mass on the baby’s neck to reduce the risk of suffocation. Afterward, preparations for the surgery began. Pediatric surgeon Samatbek Myrzakhmet, assisted by Zhalgas Kuniyazov, successfully removed the lymphangioma during the procedure, with the baby under endotracheal anesthesia.
The Public Health Department reported that the baby is now in stable and satisfactory condition and is recovering at home.
