The Mazhilis, the lower house of Kazakhstan’s parliament, will consider a draft law on artificial intelligence (AI) in its first reading, according to the parliament’s press office. The proposed law aims to establish a unified legal framework for using AI technologies.

The legislation outlines measures to:

  • Protect the rights of consumers using goods or services that incorporate AI.
  • Safeguard the personal data of Kazakhstani citizens interacting with AI.
  • Ensure the safe distribution of media products created with the help of AI.

The draft AI law was introduced in the Mazhilis in early March. MP Ekaterina Smyshlyayeva, the author of the draft law, stated that research shows frequent AI use can diminish critical thinking and analytical skills, posing a potential threat to children’s cognitive development. She emphasized that Kazakhstan seeks to regulate AI to ensure that children do not lose the ability to think, analyze and engage in critical thinking.
