In the first quarter of 2025, 77,300 children were born in Kazakhstan, a 16% decline year-on-year (YoY), marking the lowest figure in 11 years, according to the Data Hub Telegram channel.
Experts note that the drop in birth rates affected all 20 regions, with the steepest declines in the Akmola (-22%) and Zhetysu regions (-20.1%). Rural areas experienced a sharper decline than urban areas, with birth rates falling 18.1% compared to 14.2%, respectively.
The total fertility rate — the number of births per 1,000 people — dropped to 15.39, a 2.94-point decrease YoY. Analysts indicate that this negative trend began as early as 2015.
During the same period, the number of deaths decreased by 7.2% to 31,000. Consequently, natural population growth — the difference between births and deaths — fell by 20.7% to 46,300, the lowest figure since 2014.
