Kazakhstan’s national oil and gas company KazMunayGas (KMG), a subsidiary of Samruk-Kazyna, and Uzbekistan’s state-owned oil and gas holding Uzbekneftegaz (UNG) are exploring joint participation in international petroleum projects, according to KMG’s recent announcement. The potential collaboration was discussed in Tashkent by KMG CEO Askhat Khassenov and UNG CEO Bakhodirjon Sidikov.

«As part of the cooperation agreement signed in March between the two companies, the parties discussed plans to implement geological exploration projects in the border regions of Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan,» KMG said. «The companies also plan to establish a shared information space for exchanging geological and technical data and are considering joint participation in international oil and gas projects.»

Petrochemicals are also set to be a key focus of the collaboration between KMG and UNG.

«KazMunayGas places great importance on expanding mutually beneficial ties with Uzbekneftegaz. Our partnership will undoubtedly contribute to developing the energy sector across Central Asia. We are committed to actively working with our Uzbek partners in all key areas,» Khassenov said.

The parties also discussed further steps under the March 5, 2025, memorandum on cooperation in the field of digital technologies and industrial safety signed between KMG, UNG, Azerbaijan’s state oil company SOCAR and Russia’s Tatneft.

On May 12, KMG International, a subsidiary of KMG, resumed operations at its Romanian refinery Petromidia. In response to growing demand for petrochemical products in the European market, KMG launched a low-density polyethylene (LDPE) production plant. The company plans to reintegrate the LDPE facility with the petrochemical complex at the Petromidia refinery, aiming to solidify its position as Romania’s sole national polymer producer.
