Kazakh Tourism is developing a concept for tourism development at Baikonur. The agency plans to turn the cosmodrome into a point of attraction for event, scientific and industrial tourism, according to a draft concept presented at the «Baikonur: From Silk Way to Milky Way» event, which was attended by tourism businesses and public sector representatives.
The key idea of the project is to promote regular tours to the cosmodrome during non-launch periods. These tours will have cultural, educational, scientific and industrial focuses.
At the same time, Kazakh Tourism aims to boost recognition of the Baikonur brand.
«We have a clear vision of Baikonur as a global platform of the future, combining a cultural and diplomatic mission, museum transformation and brand development,» said Kairat Sadvakassov, head of Kazakh Tourism.
The agency expects that a steady flow of tourists will lead to more efficient use of infrastructure, making Baikonur more attractive to investors. Currently, investors are not interested in funding hotels and other tourist infrastructure because the city sees little to no visitor traffic during periods without launches.
This year, Kazakh Tourism and Infrakos, a subsidiary of the Ministry of Digital Development, Innovations and Aerospace Technologies, established a consortium aimed at promoting tourism at Baikonur.
