A spectacular event featuring 5,000 musicians took place in the central square of Taldykorgan, in southeastern Kazakhstan, setting a new national record.
The large-scale flash mob, titled «The Sound of the Great Steppe,» was organized in celebration of Kazakhstan’s National Day of Dombra, a traditional two-stringed lute central to Kazakh folk music. Residents of the Zhetisu region, including many young musicians, gathered for the performance.
The highlight of the event was the simultaneous playing of traditional instrumental pieces (küys) by 5,000 dombrists, a feat that was officially entered into Kazakhstan’s Book of Records.
«The event was recognized as a significant cultural achievement not only for the region but for the country as a whole,» the Zhetisu regional administration stated.
Participants performed «Baqtybaidyn Aueni» («Baqtybai’s Tune») by Baktybai Zholbarysuly and «Yerke Sylqym» («Sweet Grace») by Abdimomyn Zheldibayev — both iconic compositions in Kazakh music.
During the flash mob, musicians formed the shape of a dombra, creating a visual spectacle. A commemorative video was filmed during the event, featuring the performance set against the scenic landmarks of the region.
