Almaty may emerge as a new center for BYD electric bus production. The Chinese manufacturer is considering localizing its B12 electric model at Astana Motors’ facility located in the Turksib district, according to the city’s administration. The project was discussed during a meeting between Mayor Darkhan Satybaldy and Ivan Cao, general director of BYD Central Asia.
Localization is planned in several stages, with the initial phase involving semi-knocked-down assembly, and future phases expanding production to include welding, body painting and the manufacturing of select components.

The BYD B12 model features the Blade Battery system, which is integrated into the chassis. This lithium iron phosphate battery has safely passed the nail penetration test without emitting fire or smoke. Developed by BYD for its electric vehicles, the battery is known for its safety, durability and efficiency. It comes with a 10-year warranty and is recognized as one of the most robust battery technologies globally.
The assembly of BYD electric buses is expected to boost the modernization of Almaty’s transport system and create new jobs. According to the mayor, this is a key step toward advancing sustainable transport and enhancing the city’s industrial potential.

BYD has already sold over 110,000 electric buses across 400 cities worldwide, including markets in the U.S., Europe, Latin America and Asia. Kazakhstan is considered a promising market due to its stable demand for green technologies.
