When visiting Almaty, Kazakhstan’s largest city and cultural heart, most nature-lovers are drawn to iconic landmarks like Sharyn Canyon, the Singing Dune, Lake Kaindy or the Kolsay Lakes. While breathtaking, these destinations can be over 200 kilometers away — often turning into full-day excursions with long drives.

But what if you could experience dramatic desert landscapes and a refreshing beach escape without spending hours on the road?

A desert-style escape near the city

Just about an hour and a half from Almaty lies an underrated local favorite: Dune Beach, located near the city of Qonaev on the shores of the Kapshagay Reservoir. It’s a perfect one-day getaway that offers natural beauty, a relaxed vibe and a glimpse into how locals unwind — especially if you’re looking to explore beyond the typical tourist trail.

Here, the landscape is split into two distinct experiences: rolling sand dunes and a beachfront along the reservoir. A unique feature of this beach is that visitors are allowed to drive directly up to the water’s edge. Many locals park their cars in neat rows, set up tents, fire up grills and turn the area into a laid-back, car-camping zone — complete with music, hammocks and sunbathing.

The dunes themselves stretch in both directions, offering dramatic scenery and countless photo opportunities. Whether you wander left or right, you’ll find different paths, textures and perfect backdrops — no wonder the area has become a popular location for local music videos and Instagram shoots.

How to get there and what to know

The best way to reach Dune Beach is by personal car. The roads are in decent condition, so any standard vehicle should be fine. If you’re renting, be sure to check with your car rental agency about regional travel fees. Alternatively, check local tourism pages or social media groups for private excursion options.

For navigation, Yandex.Maps and 2GIS are considered the most reliable apps in Kazakhstan and both offer English-language versions. However, for this place, there is a convenient pin available on Google Maps.

Entrance fees & amenities

Dune Beach is not a free-entry zone. Expect to pay around:

  • $10 (weekdays) / $15 (weekends) per personal car
  • $15 / $20 for minivans
  • $30 / $38.50 for minibuses
  • $48 / $58 for full-size buses
  • $2 per person if entering on foot

Payment is accepted in cash or through the Kaspi QR system, a popular local mobile payment method. You’ll also receive a trash bag at the entrance, encouraging you to keep the area clean — a small but appreciated eco-friendly initiative.

Facilities include rural-style toilets, changing cabins and social media-worthy swings. However, there are no cafes or shops, so bring your own food and drinks. Sunscreen and bug spray are also recommended.
