Anton Kistanov, a 34-year-old urologist-surgeon from Kostanay who was assaulted by a patient, has been transferred from intensive care to the neurology department. Last week, he was airlifted to the National Coordination Center for Emergency Medicine in Astana after losing consciousness, according to the media outlet Nash Kostanay.

Doctors diagnosed Kistanov with a closed craniocerebral injury, severe brain contusion, subdural hemorrhage on the right side of the brain, and a fracture of the occipital bone extending to the base of the skull.

His condition is now improving. He is conscious, communicative and fully oriented.

The incident took place on July 17, when the surgeon, who is married and recently became a father, went to the emergency room after completing an operation to check on patients. While there, a man waiting in line became aggressive and punched the doctor, causing him to lose consciousness.

A criminal case has been opened, and the suspect has been charged with «intentional infliction of grievous bodily harm.» The accused is a 34-year-old local resident who has been detained and is awaiting trial.

While in custody, the suspect sought medical attention but later refused hospitalization, stating he did not trust doctors, claiming they were angry with him.

In response to this incident — as well as a separate attack on a nurse — Kazakhstan’s Minister of Health Akmaral Alnazarova made an emotional appeal on social media, urging citizens to stop the violence against medical professionals.
