Jack Sim, founder and head of the World Toilet Organization (WTO), has arrived in Shymkent to assess the city’s public restrooms. Judging by his reaction, Sim appeared impressed.
Sim’s visit aimed to highlight a joint project between the city administration and Miras University aimed at developing a network of public restrooms. Sim, also known as Mr. Toilet, specializes in the proper arrangement of sanitary facilities and provides consultations to governments in various countries on these issues. He was also received by Miras University Rector Nurken Khalykbergen.
As part of the project, a «Cleanliness Complex» was opened this summer in the local Arbat pedestrian zone. It features two restrooms, a shower enclosure and a police outpost. In addition, there is a small tourist information office and even a stage where street musicians perform in the evenings.
Some tourists who visited Almaty raved about a standout public toilet in the local mountains — not the cleanest, perhaps, but with a view that could easily beat that of some five-star hotels.
