President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has proposed a competition to choose the best name for the country’s first nuclear power plant (NPP).

«The joint construction of the first nuclear power plant with Rosatom is of strategic importance. Construction of the plant officially began recently. The NPP is not just an energy facility, but a symbol of scientific and technological progress. The plant does not have a name yet. Since it is the first in our country, I believe we could launch a nationwide competition to choose the best name,» Tokayev said during a meeting with winners and runners-up of international Olympiads.

He called on the school students attending the meeting to participate in the competition and be creative.

«Maybe one of your proposals will come in handy when we make the decision,» Tokayev said.

On Aug. 8, the official ceremony marking the start of construction of the country’s first NPP took place in the village of Ulken in the Zhambyl district of the Almaty region.

The cost of the nuclear power plant will range between $14 billion and $15 billion. Rosatom, as part of the consortium, will handle the construction of the plant and later transfer it to Kazakhstan.
