Volkswagen to carry iconic car names into electric era

Volkswagen has unveiled a new strategy that will transfer its best-known model names to the company’s electric lineup. The first will be the ID. Polo, set to debut in 2026, along with a high-performance version, the ID. Polo GTI, the automaker announced on its website.
The new naming system will merge Volkswagen’s traditional gasoline-powered branding with its electric ID. series. Familiar names long associated with combustion models will now be carried over to EVs.
The concept of the first such car was introduced as the ID. 2all, but it will enter production under the Polo name in time for the hatchback’s 50th anniversary. Volkswagen brand chief Thomas Schäfer said established model names hold significant value for both the company and its customers because they are associated with quality, reliability and accessible technology.

Alongside the ID. Polo, Volkswagen will launch a performance version in 2026. The ID. Polo GTI will carry on the tradition of the brand’s iconic hot hatches. A preview of the GTI concept will be shown at the IAA Mobility show in Munich, ahead of the production rollout.
The automaker is also preparing the ID. Cross, a compact electric crossover positioned as the EV counterpart to the T-Cross. Serial production is slated to begin by the end of 2026. Volkswagen said the model will target the affordable EV market, emphasizing interior quality and usability by combining soft-touch materials with both touch screens and physical buttons.
