Three police officers were killed and two others critically injured on Wednesday morning during a shooting in rural York County, Pennsylvania. Authorities confirmed that later the same day, the suspected gunman was also killed, according to Al Jazeera.
The incident unfolded as officers were investigating a domestic-related matter. Following the initial shooting, Pennsylvania State Police Commissioner Christopher Paris said the scene remains under investigation. A «major case team» was convened the same day in cooperation with the York County District Attorney’s Office, with support from the FBI.
Visiting North Codorus Township, roughly 115 miles west of Philadelphia, Gov. Josh Shapiro met with the families of the victims. He described the day as both tragic and devastating for the community and the entire state.
Shortly after the shooting, authorities issued a temporary shelter-in-place order for a local school district. This order was lifted later in the day, once nearby roads were reopened.
York County has now seen its second deadly police incident this year. In February, a different tragedy unfolded when an officer was killed during a shootout at a hospital where a man had taken staff members hostage.
U.S. Attorney General Pamela Bondi condemned the violence, urging action against what she described as part of a broader “scourge on society,” and calling for renewed commitment to protect law enforcement and communities.
