A federal grand jury in Virginia has indicted former FBI Director James Comey on two counts connected to his testimony before Congress in 2020. The charges include making false statements and obstruction of justice, according to the BBC.

Prosecutors allege Comey misled the Senate Judiciary Committee about whether he authorized others at the FBI to share information with the press concerning his conversations with President Donald Trump during his first term. The obstruction charge claims his statements improperly impeded or blocked the committee’s inquiry.

Comey denies wrongdoing, expresses confidence in the judicial process, and looks forward to defending himself. His arraignment is scheduled for Oct. 9 in Alexandria, Virginia.

The case comes as Attorney General Pam Bondi faces pressure from Trump to intensify investigations into his political opponents. The prosecution is being overseen by Lindsey Halligan, the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, who assumed the role recently.

If convicted, Comey faces up to five years in prison. Legal experts say proving intent will be central to the case.
