Kazakhstan is introducing a temporary permitting procedure for the import of slot machines, a measure aimed at combating illegal and problem gambling, the government’s press office reported.

Under the new rules, only organizations holding a state gambling license will be allowed to import slot machines.

Last summer, Kazakhstan tightened gambling regulations, banning gambling for government employees, military personnel and debtors. The country also prohibited outdoor advertising for bookmakers and the installation of lottery terminals in residential buildings, schools and hospitals.

Kursiv.media’s previous reporting highlighted that the number of legal casinos in Kazakhstan has fallen 3.6-fold over the past 12 years. Industry representatives cite high taxes as a major obstacle to business growth, while officials express concern about job losses and a decline in tourism.
