Chinese President Xi Jinping proposed creating a global organization to oversee and govern artificial intelligence (AI).
Xi made the announcement on Nov. 1 at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Gyeongju, South Korea.
According to Xi, the proposed body — which he called the World Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Organization — could establish rules for AI governance, promote international cooperation, and help turn the technology into a public good for the global community.
Notably, Reuters reported that China made a similar proposal earlier this year, but the U.S. rejected the idea of international AI regulation.
Technological and energy cooperation
As Deutsche Welle noted, in addition to AI, Xi called for expanded collaboration on open-source projects, saying it would help foster a competitive and open innovation environment. He also urged the «free flow» of green technologies, including battery and solar panel production.
APEC summit outcomes
Leaders from 21 countries in the region adopted a joint declaration emphasizing the need to diversify energy resources and ensure sustainable access to gas and liquefied natural gas.
The next APEC summit is scheduled for November 2026 in Shenzhen, China, a major technology hub known for its robotics, electric vehicle, and high-tech manufacturing industries.
