Everton had been playing with one man down since the 13th minute of the match. Idrissa Gueye received a red card after striking his teammate Michael Keane in the face.
Despite the red card, the team coached by David Moyes led the scoring in the 29th minute. Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, new to Everton, stood out with a kick from the penalty area.
Manchester United failed to stage a comeback in the remaining hour. The team coached by Ruben Amorim shot 25 times, but the score did not change. Everton’s goalkeeper Jordan Pickford made six saves, keeping a clean sheet.
According to Opta, previously Manchester United had played 46 times with numerous advantages in Premier League matches at Old Trafford, 36 of which were victories and ten draws.
Coaches’ comments
Analyzing the defeat, Amorim said that Manchester United is far from the level needed to fight for the leading positions in the league.
«I know which point we are at. I have that feeling during this run. I always talk about that. We are not there, not even near the point we should be to fight for the best positions in the league. We have a lot to do and we need to be perfect to win games. We were not perfect today,» the BBC cited Amorim as saying.
In the interview after the match, Everton head coach emphasized that the conflict between Gueye and Keane reflects the team’s attitude and spirit.
«Do you know something, I quite like it when my players have a fight. I’m sort of saying I want them to be tough. I don’t want them to accept someone not doing well enough. Someone didn’t do the right thing. If you want a winning team, and that resilience and toughness that got us the result, you have to have players who are going to act that way,» the BBC cited Moyes as saying.
