U.S. President Donald Trump launched the «Genesis Mission,» a federal initiative to advance artificial intelligence research and lower U.S. energy costs, by signing an executive order.

The executive order directs the Department of Energy to establish an AI-driven platform to accelerate scientific and engineering progress and address key energy and national security challenges identified for Genesis Mission participants, Axios reported.

Other federal agencies can set their own challenge areas, such as using AI for drug discovery.

Officials called the initiative one of the biggest uses of federal scientific resources since the Apollo program, but did not share funding details. Michael Kratsios, who leads the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, said the mission will use AI to automate experiments, improve design, enhance simulations and build predictive models in areas like protein folding and fusion research.

In turn, Energy Secretary Chris Wright highlighted that the initiative and AI aim to lower energy costs, create jobs, expand supply and improve grid efficiency in the U.S.

Meanwhile, as the global AI race accelerates, Kazakhstan earlier this year launched the Alem.Cloud supercomputer. According to the TOP500 — the ranking of the world’s 500 most powerful computer systems — Alem.Cloud currently holds the 86th position.
