A man in northern Italy was arrested for allegedly disguising himself as his deceased mother to fraudulently continue collecting her pension and renew her identity card, bringing attention to issues in national pension oversight, according to CNN.

Authorities say the man, son of Graziella Dall’Oglio, who died in 2022, didn’t report her death and continued to claim her pension.

The case came to light when a municipal employee noticed inconsistencies while assisting an «elderly woman» renewing an identity card, including visible male physical features. The staff member alerted police, who later asked «the woman» to return to the office.

Surveillance confirmed the impersonation, leading police to discover Dall’Oglio’s body at the family home. Investigators say the man, a former nurse who is currently unemployed, may have attempted to slow the body’s decomposition by removing fluids with a syringe. An autopsy has been ordered to determine the cause of death.

He faces charges including fraud, impersonation and concealing a corpse, and remains in custody pending forensic results. Italian authorities often report pension fraud involving unreported deaths, partly due to inconsistencies between local registries and national pension records.
