Jamie Carragher, former Liverpool and England defender and football expert for Sky Sports and other outlets, believes that Arne Slot has only one week left to retain his role as the club’s coach.
«Arne Slot has a week to save his job. No matter how much goodwill the manager has, Liverpool Football Club cannot sustain the drop in standards witnessed over the past three months,» Carragher wrote.
At the same time, the former player noted that he was surprised by the fans’ discussion of Slot’s potential firing. According to him, the club has always respected the head coach role and given managers time to improve the situation.
«Liverpool are different from almost every club in European football, where the manager is the king and managers get time. Liverpool have never sacked a manager who’s won the league. Never, in history. After a few years they’ve gone, they’ve resigned. I couldn’t believe at the weekend that people were talking about the manager’s job when I spoke to Liverpool supporters after losing at home to Nottingham Forest. It’s only going to amplify now,» he noted.
Carragher also said that in this situation, he is more upset with the Liverpool players’ attitude than with Slot’s performance.
“I’ve always been in the camp of sticking with the manager, because I’m angry with the players — I’m really angry with the players. But it does get to a stage with any manager at any club where I always use this word, ‘untenable,’ where it almost feels like it can’t go on any longer. I’m not quite there yet personally, in terms of the manager, but I know a lot of supporters will be,” he said.
Context
The defeat to PSV in the Champions League became Liverpool’s ninth loss over their last 12 games across all competitions, marking the worst 12-game run since the 1953-54 season. However, following the match, Slot stated that he receives support from management and feels secure in his position.
Slot’s Career
Arne Slot, 47, joined Liverpool last summer, replacing Jürgen Klopp, and led the team to victory in the English Premier League in his first season. Previously, the Dutch specialist coached AZ (2019–2020) and Feyenoord (2021–2024) in his homeland. Under his leadership, the Rotterdam-based club became national champion (2023) and won the Dutch Cup (2024).
