Renowned American actor Johnny Depp is set to join the cast of the first English-language movie adaptation of the Russian literary classic «The Master and Margarita» by Mikhail Bulgakov.
According to Variety, the Hollywood star might take one of the key roles, though it is unknown whether it will be Woland or the Master. Furthermore, Depp will serve as a producer on the movie.
Depp’s IN.2 Film is producing the project, with no director appointed, jointly with Svetlana Dali, an executive producer of «Jeanne du Barry,» and Grace Loh.
The project was initially announced at the Red Sea Film Festival in Saudi Arabia and will be produced by Dali, Loh, Depp, Stephen Deuters and Stephen Mali.
Bulgakov’s cult classic novel has been adapted for the screen multiple times, but only in Russian. The 12-episode series by Vladimir Bortko, shot in 2005, is considered the most famous and is regarded as almost canonical. The most recent high-profile adaptation was released in 2023, also in Russian, and was directed by Michael Lockshin.
