The Oscars ceremony will be broadcast globally on YouTube starting in 2029, moving exclusively from the ABC channel, Reuters reported. ABC has broadcast the annual Academy Awards continuously since 1976 and will continue to do so through 2028, which will mark the 100th Academy Awards ceremony.
Audiences are increasingly turning to streaming platforms, contributing to declining television ratings. The 2025 Oscars — also streamed on Hulu — drew 19.7 million viewers in the U.S., marking the highest viewership in five years, but still far below the peak of approximately 57 million in 1998. The value of the deal with Google’s platform has not been disclosed.
The agreement will run from 2029 through 2033, with YouTube providing multilingual closed captions and audio tracks, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences said in a statement.
According to a source familiar with the matter, cited by Reuters, ABC has struggled to generate profit from the show in recent years.
