On Dec. 19, Ahmed al Ahmed, who became widely known for saving lives during the Bondi Beach mass shooting after wrestling a gun from one of the attackers, received roughly $1.65 million in donations from more than 43,000 people, Reuters reported.
Zachery Dereniowski, a social media influencer and co-organizer of the GoFundMe campaign, presented Ahmed with a giant check, as shown in a posted video. The presentation took place at St. George Hospital, where Ahmed is receiving treatment after presumably being shot by a second gunman.
Ahmed, 43, is a Muslim father of two who migrated to Australia from Syria in his early twenties.
The mass shooting occurred on Dec. 14 at Bondi Beach in Sydney, Australia, during a Hanukkah celebration, targeting around 1,000 people and leaving 15 people dead, including a rabbi and a 10-year-old girl, excluding the gunman.
