A newly released episode from the second volume of «Stranger Things» Season 5 includes a tense, emotional sequence centered on fan-favorite characters Nancy Wheeler and Jonathan Byers, Daily Mail reported. Facing what appears to be a life-or-death situation, the pair share a brutally honest exchange that quickly sparked speculation online about a possible engagement.

That assumption was later addressed by the show’s creators, who said the moment was never meant to signal an engagement but rather to reveal the couple’s unresolved tensions.

Confessions and un-proposal

During the scene, Nancy admits she dislikes the band The Clash. Jonathan counters by confessing he rarely reads her journalism, then reveals a far more serious secret: He never applied to Emerson College, despite telling her he had.

As the tension peaks, Jonathan pulls a ring from his pocket, momentarily suggesting a proposal. Instead, he delivers a deliberately inverted question, asking Nancy if she would not marry him — framing the gesture as an acknowledgment of everything he believes he got wrong in their relationship.

Nancy agrees to the «un-proposal,» tells him she loves him, and the two share a kiss.

Still couple off screen

While the actors who portray Nancy and Jonathan remain a couple off screen, the series’ creators explained that the scene ultimately marks a turning point for their characters. Despite being together since season two, the near-death confrontation forces them to confront truths they had long avoided, leading to an emotional breakup rather than a romantic reunion.
