Two people were shot Thursday afternoon during an encounter involving a federal agent in Portland. Local officials have called for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to pause operations in the city while investigations continue, ABC News reported.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said Border Patrol agents conducted a targeted stop of a vehicle carrying two people. After agents identified themselves, the driver attempted to strike them with the vehicle, according to DHS. An agent fired a shot in response and the vehicle fled the scene.

DHS said the situation remains under investigation and that the passenger was allegedly affiliated with the Tren de Aragua gang and may be linked to a recent shooting in Portland.

Portland police officers responding to a call for help later found a man and a woman with apparent gunshot wounds and transported them to a hospital. Authorities have not released information about the victims’ conditions.

Portland Mayor Keith Wilson described the incident as deeply troubling and called on ICE to halt operations in the city until an independent investigation is completed, citing concerns over transparency.

The shooting comes amid scrutiny of federal immigration enforcement following a separate deadly incident in Minneapolis earlier this week involving an ICE agent.
