
According to the press service of Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, the final decision on constitutional reform in Kazakhstan will be made through a nationwide referendum. The statement was made during a meeting on parliamentary and constitutional reform in the country.
«The head of state underlined the need to take into account all opinions and initiatives. The president also stated that the final decision on constitutional reform will be made by citizens during a national referendum,» the Akorda said in a statement.
During the meeting, State Counselor Erlan Karin said that a working group had already discussed on Jan. 9 the basic approaches to defining the status, powers and functions of the future unicameral parliament, as well as the principles of its interaction with other branches of government.
The next meeting of the working group, scheduled for Jan. 15, is reportedly intended to address issues related to the new parliament’s powers to support the work of key state institutions.
Yerzhan Zhiyenbayev, the president’s assistant on legal issues, presented the head of state with new proposals received from the working group and the public during the discussion of constitutional reform.
In addition, during the meeting with Tokayev, officials discussed preparations for the fifth National Quryltai (National Congress), which will be held in Kyzylorda on Jan. 20. The president approved the date and instructed officials on several important details of the event.
All feedback on the constitutional reform was submitted through the e-Otinish and eGov online public platforms. So far, the government has received more than 500 proposals from citizens, experts and public organizations.
