Kazakhstan’s President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has accepted an invitation from U.S. President Donald Trump to join the Gaza Board of Peace, according to Ruslan Zheldibay, the Kazakh president’s aide and press secretary.

Kazakhstan will also become one of the organization’s founding members.

«The president confirmed Kazakhstan’s commitment to making a meaningful contribution to achieving lasting peace in the Middle East, strengthening trust between governments and promoting global stability,» Zheldibay said.

According to Bloomberg, the board’s charter requires permanent member countries to contribute $1 billion. Otherwise, their membership will be temporary and limited to three years. The funds are expected to be used for Gaza’s reconstruction.

The Financial Times also reports that the Board of Peace could potentially emerge as an alternative to the United Nations and act as a mediator in other global conflicts.
