In China, a father quit his job and moved nearly 600 miles for one reason: to make sure his daughter could eat good food.
His daughter, a college sophomore, regularly complained that the meals at her university cafeteria were bland, questionable in quality and nothing like home cooking. Instead of dismissing her concerns, the father decided to act.
From barbecue worker to campus cook
The man had been working at a small barbecue restaurant. He left that job and opened a fried rice stand just outside his daughter’s campus.
Business was slow at first. On opening day, he sold only seven servings — fewer than his daughter typically earns in a single day as a tutor.
A viral post brings unexpected support
The daughter later shared her father’s story on social media, writing that he cooked carefully and kept everything clean. She asked users for advice on how to help him attract customers.
The post quickly went viral. Soon, long lines formed at the stall, with students, faculty and local residents showing up to support the father who had moved so far to give his child a «taste of home.» The daughter now helps out at the stand during her free time.
Love shaped by loss
After her mother died of leukemia, the father and daughter were left on their own and became each other’s primary source of support. She recalled that when she was deciding where to attend college, her father told her he would follow her wherever she chose to go.
The daughter said her father had kept his word, adding that while people often describe a father’s love as a mountain, she felt his love was more like the warmth of the sun.
