Alatau, Kazakhstan’s new flagship megaproject, is set to become the region’s first fully digital city, featuring blockchain integration and a cryptocurrency-based economy, according to the Almaty regional administration, where the city is located.
International partnerships and investment
During a recent visit to China, a Kazakh delegation concluded agreements worth billions of dollars with global companies, including a construction firm involved in developing the Shenzhen technology hub. Officials hope to attract the company to participate in Alatau’s development.

Regional authorities emphasized that Crypto City is an idea that goes far beyond the conventional concept of a «smart city.» The project envisions not only the implementation of digital solutions but also the deep integration of cryptocurrencies and blockchain across all urban processes, including governance, public services, data storage and exchange.
National announcement and timeline
In late May 2025, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, speaking at the plenary session of the Astana International Forum, announced plans to create a pilot zone where cryptocurrency transactions would be permitted. The initiative, later named CryptoCity, was subsequently confirmed to be located in Alatau.
Scale and development goals
Alatau spans 88,000 hectares and has a population of about 52,200. The city includes 12 former villages as well as part of Qonaev. Authorities aim to transform Alatau into an export-oriented trade and logistics hub.
