Starlink satellite internet stations located in Kazakhstan will transmit signals not only across the country but also to neighboring states, Minister of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Development Zhaslan Madiyev announced at a recent cabinet meeting.
The announcement refers to Starlink gateway stations. An agreement to deploy the company’s infrastructure in Kazakhstan was signed last summer.
«In addition to meeting the needs of citizens, this digital infrastructure will allow Kazakhstan to strengthen its leading role in ensuring regional digital connectivity,» Madiyev said.
Regional access beginning this year
Tajikistan is expected to begin using satellite internet from the stations as early as this year, followed by Mongolia, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan.
Successful testing of direct-to-cell technology
Notably, Kursiv.media previously reported that Starlink’s Direct-to-Cell satellite communication technology was successfully tested in real field conditions in Kazakhstan. The system allows users to make calls even when no cellular network signal is available. The technology will be introduced in stages.
The test included sending a text message through a messaging app and making a call via the Starlink satellite network integrated with Beeline Kazakhstan’s terrestrial mobile network using a standard mobile phone.
