An Almaty court has sentenced an unidentified man to 100 hours of community service for persistently stalking his ex-girlfriend, Polisia.kz reported.
According to police, the man repeatedly followed the woman, threatened her and forced his presence on her. The victim eventually reported the incidents to the police, who opened a criminal case.
«Stalking is not a minor offense but a criminal act that poses a real threat to a person’s life and safety. We urge citizens not to ignore such risks, as promptly reporting them to the police makes it possible to stop illegal behavior and protect themselves,» said Duman Aukhadiyev, head of the Turksib District Police Department in Almaty.
The new article in the Criminal Code drew public attention following the murder of 21-year-old Nuray Serikbay in Shymkent. She was killed by a man who had allegedly stalked her for a long time. Despite multiple complaints, police reportedly took no action against him. The case is currently being heard under three criminal charges, including stalking.
Since the law came into effect in July 2025, eight criminal cases have been opened under the new stalking provision. In late December, a man in the Atyrau region was also found guilty of stalking and sentenced to a fine and 200 hours of community service.
