Hungarian composer György Kurtág is marking his 100th birthday with events across Hungary honoring his life and work. Widely regarded as one of the most significant figures in contemporary classical music, Kurtág is being celebrated particularly in Budapest, Euronews reported.
The commemorations began with a screening of the documentary «Kurtág Fragments» at the Palace of Arts (MÜPA). Directed by Dénes Nagy, the film explores the composer’s creative process, as well as themes of doubt, grief and loneliness in old age. Nagy said the project was filmed over four years and built from approximately 300 hours of footage.
Musicians have also reflected on Kurtág’s influence. Icelandic pianist Víkingur Ólafsson described the composer’s music as profound and intimate, emphasizing its emotional depth and economy of sound. Ólafsson met Kurtág in 2022 and recalled the meeting as a meaningful experience.
Baritone Benjamin Appl highlighted the intensity and introspective quality of Kurtág’s work, describing it as both musically and emotionally demanding. He noted that performing Kurtág’s compositions requires unusual vocal techniques and a high degree of concentration.
