The 20.5 million mark: Kazakhstan’s population growth shows no signs of slowing

Kazakhstan’s population reached 20,518,005 as of February 2026. Since the beginning of the year, the country has added 18,100 residents.

Natural increase remains the primary driver of growth. More than 15,800 babies have been born in Kazakhstan since Jan. 1. Net migration has also remained positive, totaling more than 2,300 people.

Urban areas are accounting for most of the growth. The urban population increased by 21,200 and now exceeds 13 million residents.

Meanwhile, the rural population declined by 3,000 people, falling to about 7 million.

Astana leads growth

Astana posted the largest increase, adding 10,000 residents since the start of 2026.

Almaty followed with growth of 3,300 people, while Shymkent recorded an increase of 4,200.

Regions with population declines

Despite overall national growth, several regions reported population losses.

The Turkestan region saw the largest decline, down 2,700 residents. Population decreases were also recorded in the North Kazakhstan (508 people), East Kazakhstan (556), Abay (512) and Pavlodar regions (558).
