American figure skater Ilia Malinin was honored with a prize from the International Olympic Committee. Kursiv LifeStyle explains why the committee recognized the athlete’s sportsmanship toward his Kazakhstani counterpart Mikhail Shaidorov.

According to the Olympic Games website, Malinin was awarded the 2026 Fair Play Award at the Milano Cortina Winter Olympics. The figure skater was included in a shortlist of six finalists recognized for their display of sportsmanship. Malinin’s act during the men’s singles event was particularly noted.

After a disappointing performance, the skater dropped from first place to eighth. Despite the disappointment, Malinin rushed to congratulate Shaidorov and embraced him.

«Congratulating Mikhail wasn’t about the results. It was about the shared journey we take as athletes. Knowing that fans worldwide connected with that moment means more to me than any medal,» the athlete told the committee.

The International Fair Play Committee, established in 1963, promotes the principles of sports ethics.

On Feb. 14, Shaidorov won gold at the 2026 Olympic Winter Games in Italy. Malinin finished eighth, though he had been the competition’s favorite for the gold.
