Aircraft are becoming a safer means of travel, according to the International Air Transport Association (IATA). Kursiv LifeStyle explains how air accident statistics are changing.
According to the latest report, 51 air accidents occurred in 38.7 million flights in 2025, down from 54 incidents in 2024. On average, such accidents happen once every 759,000 flights.
At the same time, eight accidents were fatal, resulting in 394 deaths, compared with 244 fatalities in 2024, when seven fatal accidents were reported.
IATA Director General Willie Walsh stated that, despite individual accidents, aviation remains one of the safest ways to travel.
«Flying is so safe that even one accident among the nearly 40 million flights operated annually moves the global data. Every accident is, of course, one too many,» he said.
The report indicated that most accidents occurred during take-off and landing, with the most common types being landing gear events, tail strikes, runway excursions and ground damage.
Air accident statistics in the CIS and Kazakhstan
In 2025, four aviation accidents occurred in the CIS, all involving turboprop aircraft. These models are commonly used in light aviation and can carry up to 20 people. The incidents mentioned in the report raised the overall incident rate in the region to 2.74 per million flights, compared with 1.44 per million a year earlier.
In 2025, two aircraft crashes occurred in Kazakhstan, both involving small aircraft. In June, a TL-2000 crashed near Astana during a training flight, killing two crew members. In August, an Aero AT-3 R100 crashed, also resulting in two fatalities.
