The fleet of electric vehicles continues to grow in Kazakhstan. Currently, more than 21,000 EVs are registered in the country. Moreover, in the last year alone, their number increased significantly, 24KZ reported, citing Kazakhstan’s Bureau of National Statistics.

Electric cars are getting more popular

According to the latest data, the number of electric cars in Kazakhstan increased by roughly 80% over the year. Several years ago, even in major cities, electric vehicles were a rare sight, but interest in them is now steadily growing.

Experts note that, from 2019, Kazakhstan imported around 1,000 EVs annually, with a significant increase in 2024-2025. With a zero import duty and preferential recycling fee benefits, importing such vehicles became more attractive. According to the Kazakhstan Automobile Union, between February and January 2026 alone, authorized dealers sold more than 270 electric vehicles.

Saving on fuel and new charging stations

Such dynamics are largely driven by savings in operating expenses. EV owners emphasize that they spend less on trips than gasoline-powered models.

Aldiyar Yermek from Astana said that it costs around 1,000 tenge (roughly $2) to fully charge the battery, providing enough energy for a 400-500 km trip. As a result, annual savings can reach 700,000 tenge (around $1,427).

Along with the growing number of EVs, the infrastructure is also developing. Charging stations are being installed at parking lots, near office buildings, in public places, and along the highways.

Share of EVs remains small

On the other hand, the share of electric cars in Kazakhstan’s fleet is still relatively low. Over 4.9 million passenger cars are registered in the country, the majority of which run on gasoline.

However, the growth trend is evident. Each year, more and more electric models hit the market, and interest in them in Kazakhstan continues to rise.
