Authorities in Russia are considering expanding a voluntary self-restriction system to include video games, according to a proposal by lawmaker Dmitry Gusev, cited by TASS.

Proposal targets gaming addiction

Gusev said the initiative is aimed at addressing the growing problem of gaming addiction. Some users, he noted, struggle to limit their playtime on their own.

Under the proposal, individuals would be able to voluntarily restrict their access to video games, similar to existing arrangements for financial services.

Existing self-ban measures

Russia has already introduced comparable tools. Since 2025, citizens have been able to place a self-imposed ban on taking out loans.

Starting Sept. 1, 2026, a similar system will apply to gambling. Once activated, bookmakers will be prohibited from accepting bets from the individual. Access can only be restored after one year.

Possible expansion to other areas

Gusev said such regulations can help people protect themselves from harmful habits and make more informed choices.

He added that the list of self-restriction options could be expanded further. Among the ideas under discussion are limits on international calls as a way to combat fraud.
