A mural of famous Kazakh singer Dimash Qudaibergen in central Almaty has been painted over, sparking backlash from residents and social media users. Local officials have since addressed the situation.
Officials cite condition of mural
In a statement, the district authority pushed back on claims circulating online that the artwork had been permanently removed. The decision was reportedly made because the mural had deteriorated.
«Since the mural had reached a critical condition, work has begun to restore the wall with the consent of the painter. The old image has been removed, and preparation is underway for a new portrait,» the statement said.
Plans for restoration
Officials said there is no cause for concern, adding that the singer’s image will return to the city. The new mural will be created by the original artist, Batyr, who painted the previous version.
