Péter Magyar, president of the Tisza Party and Hungary’s incoming prime minister, has pledged to restore democratic checks and balances and strengthen the country’s ties with the European Union and NATO following a decisive election victory on Sunday, Euronews reported.

Speaking to supporters in Budapest, Magyar said Hungary would «once again be a strong ally» in Europe and announced plans to visit Warsaw, Vienna and Brussels. In Brussels, he aims to negotiate the release of billions of euros in EU funds currently frozen. He also committed to joining the European Public Prosecutor’s Office to address financial oversight and corruption concerns.

With nearly all votes counted, Magyar’s Tisza party is projected to secure a two-thirds majority, winning 138 of 199 parliamentary seats. The ruling Fidesz party is expected to take 55 seats, while the far-right Our Homeland Movement is projected to enter parliament with six seats.

Magyar described the result as a historic mandate and called on outgoing Prime Minister Viktor Orbán to avoid decisions that could limit the incoming government’s authority during the transition period. He also called on President Tamás Sulyok and other senior officials appointed during Orbán’s tenure to resign, accusing them of serving partisan interests.
