Critics have raised concerns about the character Jin Chao, introduced as a new assistant to protagonist Andrea Sachs. Some viewers argue the role presents unflattering and stereotypical traits associated with Asian characters.
According to international media reports, some audiences — particularly in China — also objected to the character’s name, saying it resembles a derogatory phrase historically used in the West to mock Chinese names and language.
Stereotype concerns
Additional criticism has focused on how the character is depicted on screen. Despite working in the fashion industry, Jin Chao is portrayed in a more subdued, «nerdy» style, including simple clothing and glasses, rather than trend-driven outfits.
Viewers also pointed to scenes in which the character rapidly lists academic achievements, which some say reinforces stereotypes about Asians being defined primarily by academic performance.
Release timeline
Earlier reports indicated that the sequel is scheduled for release on May 1.
