A laser-based driver assistance system has been introduced on the Usharal–Dostyk highway in the Zhetysu region, southern Kazakhstan, to help prevent accidents and improve driver concentration, particularly in low-visibility conditions, regional police said.

The system is currently operating at the 13th kilometer of the highway. Laser lines projected onto the roadway create clear visual cues, helping drivers maintain lane position and stay focused during long trips.

Officials added that the bright laser markings can reduce driver fatigue and the risk of falling asleep at the wheel — one of the most dangerous hazards on rural highways.

Authorities plan to install similar laser markings at 22 additional sections of major highways across the country, including the Astana–Shchuchinsk, Almaty–Khorgos, Shymkent–Taraz and Uralsk–Russian border routes.

Drivers using toll roads where the system has been introduced say it has made nighttime driving more comfortable. They report reduced eye strain and say the road’s path is easier to follow intuitively.
