A routine landing turned into an unexpected incident when a United Airlines aircraft struck a truck while approaching Newark Liberty International Airport on Sunday, the BBC reported.
The Boeing 767, arriving from Venice, Italy, clipped the vehicle and a nearby streetlight just before touching down. Despite the impact, the plane landed safely, and none of the 231 passengers and crew on board were injured.
The truck driver was less fortunate, sustaining minor injuries after shattered glass hit his arm and hand as the aircraft’s tire smashed through the truck’s window and windscreen.
Dashcam footage from the truck captured the moment: the growing roar of a low-flying jet, followed by a sudden crash that sent glass scattering across the cab.
The truck had been traveling on a road near one of the airport’s runways at the time of the collision.
United Airlines said it will carry out a «rigorous flight safety investigation,» adding that the flight crew has been removed from duty during the process. The airline is also assessing damage to the aircraft.
Authorities have launched a formal investigation. The National Transportation Safety Board has classified the incident as an accident and requested both the cockpit voice recorder and flight data recorder. Investigators are examining factors including weather conditions, flight operations, crew performance and air traffic control.
